When I studied as an undergraduate we had black boards, dumb terminals and line printers. The computer rooms were full in the evening and there was a smoking section in the canteen.
When I returned as a postgraduate the boards were white, the dumb terminals and line printers were gone, students all had their own laptops, and smoking was banned indoors.
Technology and society are constantly evolving. Although we can't predict what the future holds we can certainly influence it!
Since September 2015, I have been employed as a postdoctoral researcher at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and director of the Privacy and Sustainable Computing Lab. I am also the Scientific Coordinator of the Scalable Policy-awarE linked data arChitecture for prIvacy, trAnsparency and compLiance (SPECIAL) H2020 project which will run from January 2017 to December 2019.

Graphsense (The Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG ) 2015-2017
GraphSense provides algorithmic solutions for real-time analytics of digital currency transactions for gaining insight into cash flows and functionality of digital currency systems. A special focus lies on anomaly detection, which should identify transactions and transaction patterns that deviate from typical structures. This could, for instance, help in identifying and tracing fraudulent activities. GraphSense will be applicable for fiat as well as emerging virtual currencies such as Bitcoin.
Líon 1 & Líon 2 (Science Foundation Ireland) 2007-2013
Líon 2 was SFI funded Centre for Science, Engineering & Technology (CSET). It set out an ambitious programme of consolidation, growth, collaboration and sustainability over five years, building on the results and achievements of the previous CSET grant (Líon-1). The Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) and its industry partners executed a research agenda and outreach activities targeted at supporting people, organisations and systems to collaborate and interoperate on a global scale by enabling networked knowledge using Semantic Web technologies.
